The Old Hen House salvage yard is my new muse.. you might have to make a few u turns until you find the lane off killoughey road just out of Donaghadee, but trust me, it’s a worthwhile treasure trail, and you have to meet it’s wonderful owner!blog uploads - 185

It’s run by Pete, a salvage enthusiast, who will go to any length to root out what you are looking for.

A lot of his wares are in the architectural salvage line, so if you are looking for that rustic door, or fabulous authentic fire place, he is your man. There’s also lots of bits and bobs to pick up for the corners of your home.

Pete’s creative abilities are unending, so if you’d prefer something you see converted into a table, a pew, or a reclaimed wooden floor..  you’re in the right place. He can create custom furniture made to measure, out of well anything really!

When we moved in to ‘the manse’ or ‘the mansh’ as I’ve rephrased it, no. 1 on my wishlist was a big kitchen table. I think life really happens around a kitchen table. It’s the most central place in a house for any interaction, from secrets and giggles shared whilst hiding underneath it, to the candlelit supper with good friends.. note to self need more of those.

After quite a trawl through Ross’s and Bangor auctions, Pete came up trumps with this table complete with winder…

Obviously my mismatched chair collection were all lined up as the perfect accompaniment.

But after a while chairs get in the way, so I went on the hunt for a pew.. the perfect way to seat any number of guests, little people in a flash for play dough, outstretched papers and refilled coffee pots. Of course pete had the answer, this pew came from a family estate, called the Deloights and the name is inscribed on the end. It was then used in Donaghadee court for a number of years. You’d think I would have enough of sitting in pews but I love it.blog uploads - 192

My timescale on projects is rather slower than Salvage sis Lucy who has already mentioned the 1829 range of paint, as I donated my pot of moonstone grey to her after I did this ‘chair lift’ months ago. I started it over 2 years ago as you can see from how young my little sanding helper is!

So here is my version before and after.

The blue chair I wrote about here, and the ‘Philippe Starck Ghost Chair’ was a little house warming present to myself. Apparently you only know the desirability of these chairs if you stare at blogs in your free time, as most people look at it with a raised eyebrow and check its weight bearing credentials before sitting on the ‘plastic chair’.

It makes me smile to think of the stories shared around this table before we owned it, and how the Steen family story will be shared here, and hopefully for generations.

And here’s what was brewing in the background to share around the table while I hopped around and tried to ‘manicure’ the photos for this post.. with special thanks to Aunty Lucy for the apron!

Festive Friends

Well hello Blogosphere. It’s been too long. But thats ok. My new years resolution is to be thankful for the things that distract us. Because they are probably worthwhile. Getting frustrated over not having time to read ‘The Week’ or ‘Style’ magazine is even less productive!

You need to share in the revolution of paper snowflakes. It started with a little festive gathering of friends and turned into Crafty craic. There were doubters. There were those who feared the shame and denied their inner crafter. But all were overcome when the admiration came rolling in, as these free and floaty paper creations hung in their festive foray.

When Jamie Oliver presented his Christmas show beneath a swathe of paper snowflakes i vowed i would find a way to cook my christmas dinner in similar snow capped surroundings..

I managed to kick things off by finding some large paper snowflakes online, and stumbling across this spectacular online shop in the process called ‘RE’. Says it all really. Probably one of the best virtual shopping experiences you’ll have. Beautifully laid out, user friendly, experiential website. The snowflakes are in ‘gREetings’, and I think I’ll carry on the paper fad all year with the star light shades in ‘REcycle’.

So armed with mull and gossip, we used this tutorial http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-Snowflake. The only point you can go wrong is when you make the cuts. Always follow the diagonal line. You’ll only do it wrong once!

Raise a Glass

We have learned the Salvage sisters like to collect in themes, it’s a way of justifying our aquisitions, as they come together in some kind of library of usefulness! I have realised that Lucy is much more professional both in her aquiring, her knowledge and research, and her diligent repurposing of items to justify their existence in her home! I would go as far as to label myself as minimal in comparison, right sis?!

However here is one of my collection fettishes, ‘Coupe’ champagne and cocktail glasses..

Coupe champagne glasses

They are highly practical in their making of any moment worth celebrating!

mojito cupcakes

Featured here, are some Mojito cupcakes I recently made for a friends birthday breakfast, and I reckon this was the perfect vessel for serving them up!

And here they are making a Birthday Bubbly moment for my good friend Vicki, complete with retro tray I’m quite attached to! There is a family famed champagne cocktail recipe I must share with you that has made many an occasion.. anyone who has ever tried it always gets back to me for the recipe at some stage!

Birthday Bubbly

You will need: 1 sugar cube, Angostura Bitters, Brandy of any type – I use Cointreau for a little orange twist, Champagne/ Cava

Place sugar cube in bottom of glass. Place a drop or two of bitters on cube.. add a shot of Brandy, top with Champagne for the ultimate Classic Champagne Cocktail!

Blog Snog

Let’s be open, I get a little thrill out of the communal love of blog! Who can deny the little flutter that comes with a comment, or a pingback or a ‘pin’ interest..

I’ll have to admit, I seem to be more into reading blogs, blog crawling or creeping as I think its known, than posting at the moment. Its why the Salvage Sisters are a great duo, right sis! What with the Sis upping her photos another notch, the inadequacy is ever greater to be a contributor to the beautiful world of blog.

I just wanted to rave about a few blogs I’ve been creeping lately, with a focus on good old Northern Ireland for today.. and give them more a peck on the cheek, than a snog! Phew.

First up the really and truly ‘Absolutely Glorious’ by Jenny, a fellow East Belfaster, and dreamy, inspiring and i’d say romantic blogger of life. She makes the everyday into something Sugared, Spiced and irresistable. Pop over to see her world of kitsch memorabilia, perfectly placed blooms, and charming muses on life. If you’re left longing for one of her irresistable looking bakes, check out her business Silver Spoon Society.

Next we have the artiste and mad hatter Aly over at Aly McLoughlin Harte. Here you’ll pick up a a dollop of positivity and a dash of the joy in every day in her fabuously honest, and hugely creative musings on the day to day of family life..

Lately, I was given a word up on Mel Wiggins, and all the more keen to read on, when I saw she hails from the Craigavon direction, near where I grew up! Assuming you’re a blog boff if you’re here, you’ll know that comeradery, and joy that comes from having something in common with someone you dont even know and have never met! What is that. Im still not sure. But I’ve been enjoying her adept skill at actually doing the things I intend to, like home made cosmetics and cleaning your house with vinegar, Acting up against Human Trafficking, and i loooove it – ‘Crafternoon Teas‘ for the fellow craft amateur/enthusiasts to unite in a joined purpose to create.

Now for those more reflective moments, when all your inventing, crafting, and thrifting is done I’d say Tell it in Colour, will lift your spirits and poke your positivity, and Steve Stockman’s Soul Surmisewill stir you up, especially if you like to go deeper in the everyday.. his analytical view of life and love through song lyrics is an alka seltzer for the soul..

Kissing booth!

Chalkie Talkie

I haven’t found a reason to indulge in an I-pad yet.. for now I’m happy with my tablet as per our grandparents at their wooden desks in front of a coal fire at school..

The chalk board.

The blackboard/chalkboard wall is nothing new and can be seen in any nook, corner or vast space as seen below. Chalkboard paint is pretty readily available too, a couple of coats and you’ve got your feature and very functional wall.

In my house I painted the wall beneath the staircase, and we use it as a calendar, message board, picture wall, guest wall.

The same slates make a very nice table runner and heat mats, and I personalise them for the occasion, our lovely friends were round the other night, for no particular occasion..

Christmas bits ‘n bobbles

I tried very hard to lose my christmas humbug this year, and I must admit a massive drive at organisation and a 2 year old have definatley helped. However its truly the run in now, and I cant say I’m totally organised, it’s more a matter of just giving up! Have adopted the granny method of a wee cash spot for the remainder of my ungotten presentations.

Meanwhile, the sparkles and bobbles have all but blocked my blog outlet, so here are a few Salvage sis christmas blobble tips.. bit late for some of them, but I’m sure all of you havent finished wrapping just yet!

Decorations.. I used the necessary prunings to our christmas tree to provide a free surround on the mantle, or fir place!

Any greenery looks great in the house at christmas, as long as you do it decadently as Lucy mentioned in her previous post.

Fir place

Anyone will be impressed with a present you have rustled up yourself, too late now of course but log it for next year. If your lucky you might be the recipient of one of my home made potions. Nigella’s Christmas Chutney, and Honeyed Fig Vinegar, both from her Nigella’s christmas book, which i must say would knock the humbug out of anyone!

Of course saving up your jars is key, and decorate them with any remaining scraps of wrapping paper, material, gift tags.

Chrismtas Chutney and Honeyed Fig Vinegar

Lastly wrapping, a very savvy friend of ours gave us wedding presents wrapped in the financial times and adorned with decadent ribbon. They looked fabulous and I’ve always meant to copy her!

I thought with our current financial tornado, and the ever escalating corporate take on christmas this makes a nice little piece of statement wrapping! Plus the dusky pink pages against the dark ribbon look gorgeous! AND they’re all ready in perfect sized rectangles so no cutting out the wrong size and consequent swearing,  helping to keep the joy!

Financial times wrapping

I love the vintage take on christmas, clashing bright colours of old. Hence the decision to return to coloured lights and tinsel on the tree this year. If anything has got to be kitsch its the tree. Here is an example of some festive neons for you, and again cutting out the agony with pre large pieces of tissue which you just scrunch at the ends, no awkward corners here! boom, done!

kitsch tissue

Wishing our readers a very merry, kitsch and cosy christmas. We really are delighted when anyone stops by here, so thank you and a spicy hug.. you are all angels!

PS Of course Christmas is one of the pinnacles of my faith, and I celebrate it with joy, I just find the exhaustive to do list and earnest intention to make it something extraordinary so strange, when really good food, family and fun is all thats important! End of qualifer.

Crate Sate

Take a ‘sate’ as they say round here.

My guests have been doing just that, some with curiousity, some with glee, some with a frown!

Following my post ‘Pallet Hi’, I was tickled to see this pallet waiting for me round the corner from home where a builder had just finished with it. A nice new one.

Following a serruptitious tug at it and realising it was fimly stuck, I decided to take the legitimate path and ask the owner of the cast off if I could have it. This resulted in a good old chuckle for the two builders who offered to deliver it to my door!

The chuckle became a hearty laugh when my dubious other half informed them what it was for!

Here is the conversion so far.

Im toying with putting Caster wheels on for more height, however at the minute its perfect for just flopping onto and for the resident two year old to headstand onto at speed!

I looked into getting a piece of foam cut to size for the top, but an unsuspecting single mattress was saved from eviction, and was reduced to size by removing a few springs. A much comfier seat pad I’d say. Wish i’d seen your christmas decor idea with bedsprings before then Salvage Sister!

And the pallet wasn’t as new as i thought, bit faded.

Check out my new Penguin books postcard collection on the wall, a little birthday present from the Sis. They make a great colour block. Thanks!

And finally, in case you doubt me.. there’s a market for this! Check out this pallet table for sale here.

Antiquing in the rain – Drummond Reid Antiques

This weekend I took a delightful little tour around some spots I’ve recently found or heard about with my friend Cassie of Olive Owl Art. If it’s a rainy Saturday afternoon- antiquing-snoop around in NI you’re after, this is your guide!

First up, a real treat, recently popped up in Belfast City centre – Drummond Reid, just off of the Ormeau Road on Sunnyside St. They have moved in from Saintfield in the last number of months, and I’m glad they did! You’ll find a really broad range of items from classic to shabby chic to funky retro if  one may describe ‘antiques’ as such! They have caught the vision for the current rage on mid century furnishings and have some fab examples..

in and old Church hall.. on Sunnyside St

'G plan' nest of tables

Mid Century Sideboard.. a beaut!

In love with these SOLD chairs 🙁

Re-upholstering.. fabulous!

Pair Tulip tables - so 50's!

This is for you sis.. Cornish Blue Collector

The owner hard at work, and delighted to tell you anything you need to know!

The owner was full of facts about his stock, and happy to share them. Nice to meet you!

Moooom, not more!

Next we popped in to ‘Smithfield Market’ out the back of Castlecourt. I wouldn’t plan a trip downtown just for this, but if you are in the area, nip in and take it in, it’s a bizarre few aisles of shops/units. The antique shop is possibly too much for even Mary Queen of Shops to organise, but is worth a dig. However, everything I wanted the owner seemed to want too, and there isn’t much room to browse, think this one is for collectors who really know what they’re after!

We picked up a flyer that day for a Collectibles and antique fair on the Lisburn road, which it appears is on every second Saturday here. So we mooched on over. It was a few tables in a hall affair, and well worth the look. Its amazing how many collectors/dealers there are out there, and in this kind of setting the prices are still reasonable.

I got this great, and very official ‘Miller’s’ guide for £2 so I can at least own pictures of 50’s items, if I cant fit them in my home!

Millers Guide to 1950s

Here’s a good link to a  guide to some other places if you’ve still got the energy!

And I’m excited to find MKVintageUSA who I mentioned in my last post will be at this fair in Newtownards this weekend.. maybe see you there!

Someone who knows*, tells me Ballinderry Antiques is worth a look too, want to come?

*This person shall remain nameless as he’s meant to be on Ivan’s side!

Get skirty

I’ve mentioned one of my blog crushes, Miss James at Bleubird vintage before. She does a thread called Mama style which is worth checking out for those uninspired dressing days! I find if I keep an inspiring pic in my head, it spurs me on to make an effort in the morning! Check her out for lots of vintage life and fashion inspiration and bouts of downright jealousy!

It’s been a while since we show cased some Salvage sister fashion finds, so here’s a collection of skirts for you. Had my Salvage sister over in the summer so didn’t even have to fall out with the husband to get some of these shots!

The skirt, so up-or-down beat, whatever you want it to be depending on what goes above and below it.

First up, Im in love with navy at the moment, and grey, and navy and grey..

Seasonal food: Victoria Plum Crumble

I’m proud of our wee country for being able to produce it’s very own fruit! That’s why I feel compelled to do things with it. Right now the contents of my kitchen table are all locally grown NI fruits given to me by lovely organic comrades.

We all know there is only so long you can virtuously pluck a fresh piece from the tree or your harvest stash, enjoying the knowledge of knowing where it grew, and how it wasnt sprayed or flown many miles to your clutches, until they start dropping off the tree or grow vinegary hair in your fruit bowl! So we have to find other things to do with it to preserve the joy. My mother in law has a Victoria Plum tree out back.  She tells me she does absolutely nothing to it, so the unbelievable harvest this year must be to do with the elements. I’ve heard all the berries are hanging heavy, so keep your eyes peeled and get picking this autumn!

I would say these little boys are slightly lacking on the flavour side, so our tree must have struggled to nurture them all to perfect sweetness, but that delicate flavour is still heaven!

Sugar, Cinammon, Star anise.. go!

The main problem with cooking with stone fruit.. is the stones. Those things take about as much time to get out as it took to get them in there! But dont let that put you off, its worth the digging and ‘hoking’ as they say round here. I think people get this vision when you right enthusiastically about food, that you live in a blissful bubble of joy, merrily humming and joyously popping your treats in the oven. Actually I curse, spill flower everywhere, huff and puff and then sit down when its all cooked and think, it was bliss too, cause its worth it!!

Almond crumble topping

I decided to make crumble as its easy. But good old HFW will guide you on making Roast Plum sorbet, Plum Salsa and Plum chutney here. I literally guessed the amounts and sprinkled over sugar and cinammon, and I always use star anise now because Jamie Oliver taught me to. I think everybody has their own little twist on crumble so I wont elaborate on how to make it.

I serve everything with Greek Yoghurt!

I’m eating it now. It’s bitter. And the crumble is too floury. I shouldn’t have guessed! But the house smells good, and I still feel virtuous! Call in for some if you’re closeby! x
