When I was five I wanted to be an actress. That’s me posing on the red
\nvelvet chaise longue, draped in mum’s fox furs.<\/p>\n

Now, 30 years on I’ve not quite realised the ambition, but I am the proud
\nowner of a Victorian chaise longue and I’m considerably better practised
\nin the art of posing.<\/p>\n

My desire to purchase my own chaise must have sprung from this childhood
\nmemory. So I’m rather tickled to consider that my recliner, at some point
\nin its history, sat patiently in wait for a corseted Victorian lady lest
\nshe faint from shortness of breath when ascending the stairs. Customarily
\nfainting couches were installed at the top of every flight in suitably
\nwell-appointed houses.<\/p>\n

Salvaging an antique is not only a chance to delve into the history of
\nfurniture, but a way of recycling and preserving. This is my debut.
\nInspired by that childhood moment, I scoured ebay for viable options. I
\nwas poised to purchase a repro for about \u00a3200, when my dear friend and
\nadvisor, Flo Keef (antique furniture restoration expert) remarked “Oh, you
\ndon’t want to buy one of those!”<\/p>\n

Without further ado I heeded her advice and purchased an old Victorian
\nchaise for \u00a370. ‘Needs some repair work’ said the posting. This was some
\nunderstatement as I was to discover on pick-up. The entire
\nthree-dimensional structure of the seat had collapsed. And with it my
\nimmediate chances of comfortably draping myself across it.<\/p>\n

I resolved to go through with the purchase and pursue reupholstery
\noptions.\u00a0 A colleague of Flo’s offered to help out for a very reasonable
\nprice. To reconstruct the seat and recover, she charged \u00a3300. I paid \u00a360
\nto have the woodwork (American maple) stripped and waxed; \u00a350 for the
\nfabric (from Fabric’s Galore) and \u00a320 for a matching braid (from VV
\nRouleux).<\/p>\n

Although I ended up paying a little bit more than I’d initially bargained
\non, I’m utterly thrilled with my new chaise and will treasure it for many
\nyears to come.<\/p>\n
